Versed in Vino — wine fluency for professionals A professional swirling a glass of red wine at a candlelit business dinner

Wine fluency for professionals

Wine, finally, as a skill not the thing you fake.

You've mastered the pitch, the presence, and the handshake. Nobody ever taught you wine. Versed in Vino is the briefing that lets you walk into any dinner, mixer, or gift exchange ready.

Why people choose Versed in Vino

The professional skill you were never taught.

You've refined your education, your wardrobe, and your presentation — because presence matters. For many, that confidence wavers the moment wine enters the conversation.

The Default Move
Leaning on "whatever you recommend" works — until it starts to feel like a missed chance to lead the table.
The Spotlight Moment
The wine decision lands on you, and pulls your head out of the conversation you came for.
The Rapport Gap
While you decode the menu, a prepared colleague is already building rapport.
The Knowledge Assumption
You're expected to "just know" wine the way you know your industry — though nobody briefed you.
The Efficiency Problem
You don't need a certification — just the 20% of wine knowledge that covers 80% of the moments you face.
The Thing Nobody Says
That flicker of doubt when a bottle hits the table — and how fast it vanishes once you know what you're looking at.

Explore the five-pillar method

Five pillars to wine fluency.

Pillar I
Regions & Styles
A working knowledge of the world's major regions and the styles they produce — enough to read almost any list or label and know what to expect.
Pillar II
Decoding the Label
Read a wine label in under a minute — producer, region, vintage, style — so by the time you order, you already know what's inside.
Pillar III
Strategic Communication
How to actually talk about wine: describe what you like, ask what's available, and work with a sommelier to land on something great.
Pillar IV
Professional Etiquette
The tasting pour, the cork, the order of pouring — the small rituals of hosting a table, done so they feel easy, never performative.
Pillar V
AI & Modern Resources
How to use AI as a wine assistant: what to ask, where the tools fall short, and when to ask a person instead.

How it works

Three steps to showing up versed.

No theory you'll never use. Just the working knowledge that makes the moment feel easy.

01 — Get briefed

Build the working knowledge

Start with what actually comes up: regions, labels, and the language of the table. Short briefings you can finish between meetings.

02 — Rehearse

Walk through the real moments

The client dinner, the strategic gift, the toast. Practise the scenarios you'll face until they stop feeling like a test.

03 — Show up versed

Stay fully in the room

Walk in prepared and stay there — present, focused on the people across the table, not half-managing the bottle in your head.

Common problems. Clear solutions.

Traditional wine education is built for people who want to study wine forever. Versed in Vino is built for people who want wine to stop being the awkward part.

Traditional Education
The Versed in Vino Briefing
Built for the enthusiast: curricula for those entering the trade or pursuing it as a hobby.
Built for working professionals: people who need to be good in the room, not behind a tasting bar.
Technical immersion: deep academic theory and vineyard specifics that take years.
Scenario-based: the client dinner, the high-stakes gift, the social mixer.
Standardised knowledge: general info not linked to the situations you face.
For the moments that matter: wine fluency as a natural tool for connection and confidence.
Time-intensive: a massive commitment regardless of your schedule.
Designed for your schedule: short modules, no filler — finish one between meetings.

The story behind the work

A perspective formed in high-stakes environments.

From analysing political landscapes for the Department of Defense to building wine fluency for professionals who were never taught it — here's how Shilpa got here.

The background

I didn't come to wine through viticulture. I came to it through analysis.

Carnegie Mellon, Johns Hopkins, then a U.S. Intelligence Officer for the Department of Defense — turning complex, high-pressure information into clarity. The same instinct I brought to wine.

How wine became the work

It started as a joke — until I asked why I was waiting. I left government, started over on the floor of San Diego's oldest wine store, and launched VinoVida, my own wine shopping business.

The hard part

Surrounded by serious collectors, I'd wonder why anyone would take my recommendation. That floor taught me the lesson of my career: great guidance starts with understanding the person, not sounding impressive. Later, running a multi-million dollar program, I saw the same pattern everywhere — accomplished people, unsure around wine.

The moment everything changed

A client asked me to teach wine to doctors who met it constantly but were never taught a thing. Wine is a professional skill, and almost no one teaches it as one. That's why I built Versed in Vino.

Mission & vision

What we're here to do.

Our Mission
To give client-facing professionals the practical wine fluency they were never taught — so they walk into every dinner, mixer, and tasting prepared, present, and focused on the relationships that matter.
Our Vision
A professional world where wine is a source of connection, not hesitation — where confidence around wine is the result of preparation, not luck.

Wine as a working professional skill.

So much of work has moved behind a screen. The dinner table is still where serious relationships get built in person. Knowing your way around wine doesn't make you a connoisseur — it frees your attention for the people across from you.

As more of our work automates, the ability to build trust in person only grows more valuable. Most people who look effortless simply had a head start. Everyone else just needs the right briefing.

Move beyond the menu

Start showing up versed.

A corporate gala, a strategic gift, a boardroom lunch — wine is already part of the conversation. The goal isn't to become an expert. It's to feel at home in any room where wine comes up.

The ease you bring to any room comes from being ready before you walk in. That starts here.
